Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional disorder of the gastrointestinal system. Patients experience abdominal pain with either predominantly diarrhea, constipation or both. IBS affects up to 11% of the global population and is a functional condition of the bowel that is diagnosed using clinical criteria. IBS is strongly associated with functional impairment and mood, anxiety, and sleep disorders. Patients with IBS have been found to have health-related quality of life.
In Greece the prevalence of IBS is over 20%.
Therapeutic approach: Among the therapeutic instructions are changes in lifestyle habits (e.g. physical exercise, sleep, stress reduction, etc.) and dietary changes such as increased fiber intake, etc. Medicines are available and can improve the symptoms of IBS. However, no treatment can cure this condition.
